Airplane connected via Teledyne technology

Screenshot below - Report of the status of data transmission from the WQAR block on the fleet of an airline that does not fly due to COVID19.

Very sad picture. All aircraft are parked and now the unit is not transmitting anything. But this is not what I want to talk about.

I want to talk about using WQAR (WGL Comm+ Technology) in an airline in a normal condition. This is especially important in the work of a low-cost company when every minute on earth very important (in a normal world, without a pandemic).

Now I work with WQAR unit by Teledyne (I had experiences with similar units by Avionics, but I can't say that it was better or worse, because it's chipper). This is a very convenient system: as soon as the airplane arrives, the unit immediately transfers all the flight information to the server.

The Internet connection is responsible for the transfer, 4 SIM cards in the block. Internet connection is automatic: the plane landed (racks touched, doors need to be closed). Parameters (conditions) for enabling the data transfer mode are provided by the aircraft wiring diagram.

Teledyne knows the working conditions of the block, but only the plane (Boeing or Airbus) gives the final version.

But if you fly often, then this system can become very moody. When it is on the ground for a short time, the block starts to fail, I am not a developer, I assume that the Linux system on which the block is built depends on a sudden shutdown during data transfer.

That is, the unit is transmitting data, suddenly a transfer stop has occurred (one of the conditions for disconnecting data transfer has worked). After resuming (if the file is large), data transfer may not resume.

To resume transmission, a banal reboot of the system is required: turn on/off (if you are lucky). But sometimes (for reasons incomprehensible to me) it is necessary to reinstall some software: configuration file. I think the system does not have a hard reset function, so you have to reinstall the software configuration, and only after that, it starts working again.

This is a theory. My theory. What happens in practice:

Good scenario: The decryption team receives uninterrupted information from the plane as soon as it arrives. You do nothing. Things are good.

Bad scenario: the decryption team suddenly stops receiving information from the plane. They begin to complain about interruptions at work. First step: turn off. Turn on the relay. Did it not help? Install the configuration software using the card.

I’ve been playing with this system for a long time and it’s time to release a guide on finding trouble and how to deal with it :)

For users, I recommend the new OPS. Ask your technical representative. In general, the Teledyne resource is very useful: www.teledynecontrols.com with huge SL, SB, manuals, and software. Next time I will write about a useful system by Teledyne (This is not an advertisement :) I talk about my personal observations).
